ABSTRACT
STUDY PURPOSE: This project was a multivariate validation study of unilateral cervical contusion (hemi-contusion) model-development efforts.
DATA COLLECTED: The dataset includes N=159 rats with hemisections (n=9), NYU MASCIS weight drop contusions: sham (n=10), 6.25 mm (n=10), 12.5 mm (n=32); Infinite Horizon Impactor: sham (n=6), 75 kdyn (n=58), 100 kdyn (n=34). Behavioral recovery was monitored over 6 weeks using mutiple assements taken from the same subjects: Grooming Score, Paw Placement in a Cylinder, BBB locomotor subscore, Forelimb Open Field Score, and numerous Catwalk footprint analysis metrics. Histopathology metrics included lesion epicenter gray matter sparing, white matter sparing, total tissue sparing, and motorneuron numbers.
PRIMARY CONCLUSION: Principal component analysis (PCA)-based multidimensional pattern detectors can resolve the ‘syndrome space’ across multiple models of SCI, allowing direct comparison of subjects with diverse injury types, outcome sets and therapeutics.

Primary data collected as part of this paper included model development efforts for the Infinite Horizon (force driven) injury data collected in the course of developing the unilateral contusion model in the rat. Analysis of these data are reported in primary form as part of this paper and then analyzed in ensemble with NYU/MASCIS data reused from Gensel et al. 2006 as an analytical derivative work product. These data were reused in combination with other data for larger scale analysis in Nielson et al., 2015.

Analysis of these data were subsequently reported partially in Gensel et al., 2006, with the remaining data published as part of large scale analysis in combination with other data in Ferguson et al., 2013 and Nielson et al., 2015.

This paper reports the primary data on the development of the unilateral contusion spinal cord injury model in rats using the NYU/MASCIS device. The reported outcomes include 6 weeks of behavioral data collection using a number of endpoints collected on the same animals as well as detailed histology. This represents a peer-reviewed and published subset of the data collected as part of the Gensel dissertation. These data were included, along with additional curated data in Ferguson et al., 2013 and Nielson et al., 2015.
